As much as we talk of all the incredible qualities of springtime (warmer weather, longer days, freshness, and energy)…for some people, it is a season of stuffy heads, itchy eyes and runny noses.
Spring allergy symptoms can be a real problem for many people this time of year.
Here are 10 key foods that may help reduce and calm inflammation, act as a natural antihistamine and ease congestion.
Plus they are just delicious, so adding them into your week’s menu plan should be a delight!
Garlic::
In my family we just can’t get enough of garlic…and we add it into most of our meals. Garlic has many health benefits, but in particular for allergy sufferers the sulfur compounds make it act as a powerful immune builder which goes a long way toward easing sinus symptoms.
Onion::
Onion has a compound quercetin which is an anti inflammatory flavonoid. This compound works as a natural antihistamine and is also found in apples, broccoli, tea and red wine).
Ginger::
If you have sinus problem, ginger should be your best friend. It decreases inflammation, thins mucus, and helps clear nasal passages. Fantastic as a seasoning in soups and stirfries, you can also add some grated fresh ginger to hot water for a soothing tea.
Tumeric::
Tumeric contains curcumin which is highly anti-inflammatory and works to soothe flare ups due to allergic reactions.
Hot and Sweet Red Pepper::
Red peppers have immune-boosting carotenoids and high amounts of vitamin C which works as an antihistamine.
Flaxseed, Walnuts and Salmon::
Omega 3 fats found in foods like flaxseed, walnuts and salmon provide major anti inflammatory benefits.
Greens::
Green leafy veggies like kale, swiss chard, turnip greens, spinach and beet greens are loaded with minerals and compounds (like beta carotene and lutein) that improve your immunity.
Berries::
Berries are one of my favorite foods. For me, it’s a bonus that they are exceptional for your health because they are so easy to eat! They contain anthocyanidins and antioxidant compunds that quell inflammation and improve immune function.

Has anyone tried local honey (honey from the local pollens)? I’ve been told that it helps minimize symptoms but I’ve never met anyone who has actually had success with this. Thanks!
You know I’ve heard of that for years now. I’m personally not an allergy sufferer so don’t have first hand knowledge of whether it works…anyone else have experience with this?
